Unexpected Conversation Before Class
Mike got to class early today and the professor of the previous class was alone in the room gathering his belongings to leave.
“Hello.” Mike smiled at him.
“Hello.” The professor smiled back amiably. “What class are you here for?”
“Sociology of Gender Theory,” Mike responded.
He looked Mike over as if he were thinking, “What are you doing in a Gender Theory class?”
“Oh!" He said surprised. "Well, to each his own. We really need to be careful to learn to not be hateful toward other people who differ from us.”
“Are you talking about sodomy and lesbianism?” Mike flatly suggested.
The professor raised his eyebrows and looked surprised.
"Uh, yeah. We shouldn’t be mean to those kinds of people. They are not really hurting anybody…." He sputtered, "and why would you call it sodomy?"
Mike said, “You know what sodomy is, right?”
“Yeah, I do,” he acknowledged.
“Well, that’s the more accurate word for it. You know, it’s common these days for people who express a different point of view to be taken as hateful or attacking. Let me ask you a question. If I were to draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa, would you try to stop me?”
“Of course I would!”
“Would you try to stop me as a friend of art or as an enemy of art?”
“Well, as a friend of art!”
“So, if I go to somebody and talk to them about the realities of what they are doing as a practicing homosexual and the ramifications of that…facing the wrath of God and the destructive nature of it in this life, would I be their friend or their enemy?”
It was obvious that he had not thought about this before.
“Uh, I don’t know. I think people should be able to have sex the way they want to.” Mike gently responded, “I wasn’t talking about sex. I was talking about homosexuality. Sex is beautiful. It is a gift from God to a man and woman who are committed to each other in marriage. Homosexuality is the perversion of that gift, and God condemns it in the Bible. I want to help those who practice homosexuality by coming to them as someone who is a friend of sex and a friend to them.”
“Ohhhh, so you are coming to it from a religious perspective. What does God have to do with it?”
Mike grinned. “What do you mean, ‘What does God have to do with it?'” The professor insisted “What does God have to do with it? Why does God care?” “Because God invented sex! That’s like asking Thomas Edison what he has to do with the light bulb!”
He looked startled. “Then why would you care about it?”
“Because I care about God.”
“You care about God?” The idea baffled him. “Why is that?”
“Because I have come to know and love Him,” Mike gently answered.
“Really.” He was intrigued.
Mike explained. “In college, I was pretty rebellious and angry. Then I was introduced to Jesus Christ. I was shown the truth that I was made by God and that I was rebelling against Him. Then I was shown that instead of God hating me for that, He loved me and sent His Son Jesus Christ, to do for me what I could not do for myself.”
"What could you not do for yourself?" the professor genuinely queried.
Mike explained. "God requires perfection to be in His presence. He is holy, morally perfect, and I knew full well that I was far from that. But I learned that God dealt with my failure by sending His perfect Son, Jesus, who lived a perfect life and then took my sins on Himself and paid for them though His death. He paid for my sin and gave me His perfect account. I am now at peace with God, and I owe Him everything. I love Him first in my life and seek to live for Him. I trust Him, and I know that if God says something is right, then it’s right and good. And if God says something is wrong, it’s wrong and harmful. I want what God wants. He is God and He knows best.”
“Really.” The professor said with emphasis.
You could tell he was thinking deeply. He had just heard a lot of things that he obviously had not thought of before. As he gathered his books in his arms, he smiled and thanked Mike. Perhaps they will meet again
*from Mike: I could not have had this conversation in this way without the help of a little book called Persuasions by Douglas Wilson. I have read this little book of conversations many, many times and it delights me to be having actual conversations using much of the wonderful logic and truth it taught me.
